But thats impossible, you say, Money doesn't just grow on trees! Ah, theres where you are wrong... Since the US went off of the Gold Standard, there is no reality behind the dollars you wave: only a consensual delusion keeps our pocketbooks full of something other than worthless paper. Counterfeiters create money don't they? But thats illegal, you cry.
True, but what about the stock market? You buy some stock for $10 and later sell it for $20 -- where did that extra $10 come from? Thats easy, it came from the other guy. If all of that money comes from the other guy, then which guy is it who has put trillions of dollars into the stock market? Of course no one has, it's a mountain of paper without any support in which wealth is created and destroyed almost at random.
In the same sense, by loading this page you have triggered extensive CGI scripts that took years to create. These scripts pass their messages through a low-level db interface into the Banking Computers and after some number crunching, save one and only one penny from destruction. This isn't counterfeiting, it's not the creation of fake money, it's the preservation of a solitary penny headed for the afterlife.
